The classic ticking noise mystery. 2003 kawasaki vulcan 800, 20k on the clock, new valve shims, checked cam chains, new oil and filter. On the 1500, the service manul says a special tool is need to pull the spark plug tubes, but you can fashion a tool out of the rear axle nut and unscrew the tube. I'd bet the 800 is similar. Mine lost power and stalled twice over a couple months while at about 20 MPH. Shortly afterward, I started smelling gas and the leaking from the carb only got worse. I pulled the tank jsut to look, but backed off the carb. The Suzuki has no tachometer, but it feels like it revs out to about 5000 rpm before signing off, while the heavier-by-50-lbs fully loaded Kawasaki's tach shows the redline at 8500 rpm. I had a 1982 GS750TZ for many years, and it would really fly, but the 2006 Suzuki 800 feels like it really flies, too.

It is very likely the receiver in the hub thats bent from misalignment, this will have to be fixed to make the speedo cable spin. A quick check is to remove the cable from the hub and spin with your fingers while looking for movement on the speedo needle. If it moves, your problem is in the hub. If not properly seated when the wheel is reinstalled, this part will not allow the cable to spin. May work for awhile then stop.

You might want to check the voltage and the connection points with a multimeter to compare.

A couple things that'll wake up the 800 I've done are to debaffle the stock pipes, and Grampsized the air filter housing, see link below. Great tips on here. Proper jetting needs done along with these mods. The 18/40 spockets really change the way this bike accerates, makes the gears stretchout more. I fill the oil filter full, roll it in my hands, tipping it sideways as I do this while the oil is absorbed into the filter element, then fill it again about 2/3 of the way.
